There were four distinct columns of smoke rising into the air. three were in the direction of the airport and one was further to the east. one of the columns, the one that looked closest to the airport, was significantly bigger than the other three. "i'm thinking that suzy is right. something is really wrong!" jim exclaimed. he looked at mark, "are you thinking what i'm thinking?" "emp?" jim nodded his head. "what's e-m-p?" suzy asked. "it stands for electromagnetic pulse." jim told her, "it's a byproduct of a nuclear explosion and it knocks out electronics in the blast area." "you-you-you mean we've been nuked?" suzy stammered. "let's not jump to any conclusions." mark advised, "we obviously haven't taken a direct nuclear hit or we wouldn't be standing here. jim, go try your car and i'll try mine." as jim walked toward his car, suzy followed mark to his jeep. "well, if it's not emp, what else could it be? oh, god, this is bad. i have to get home. what if we were nuked and we just don't know it yet? what if." "suze! calm down. we don't know enough to even guess what's going on and panicking is not going to help no matter what." jim tried the jeep, but just like suzy's car it would turn over but not start. jim had hoped that since it was a 1978 model and didn't have a computer that it would be okay. "my truck won't start either." jim said as he walked up. "what do we do now?" suzy asked. "let's go back to my office and see if my portable radio will work." mark answered. when they got to mark's office he opened his bottom desk drawer and pulled out a small radio. he turned it on and all they heard was static. "well at least it comes on." jim stated. "why wouldn't my car radio work?" suzy whispered. "if we got hit by emp it probably burned out your car radio, but this one may have been protected some by the building and by mark's metal desk. try 1200, mark.

This past month we celebrated our second cherry blossom festival with the city of west covina. again, it turned out to be another great event and i must say that i was so pleased to see so many of our members embracing the "spirit" of this joint effort. there are so many people to thank for all their hard work, like the temple, the gakuen, the sabers, our "mc's" and the many, many performers who all contributed. it is too difficult to name everyone so please accept my overall appreciation to all of you. it takes a few years for events like this to really take off, and i certain we have created the beginning of a new tradition. besides, the mayor of west covina made a commitment to us that next year's festival, he promised to have a canopy over the sitting area and one more over the stage area so next year's will be even better. this should really help us with the weather and more people will stay longer. i believe we are making progress in a number of areas and i hope you will all continue to give our center your best efforts. we really have the potential to do great things together! june is a month that you always hear about "dads and grads", and it's a catch-phrase we all just seem to say. i remember my first father's day as my oldest daughter happened to be born on father's day that year, so that will always be one of many fond memories. this year, "grads" has special meaning to me. that same daughter is now getting ready for college and my youngest is now preparing for high school. their graduations are rapidly approaching and it really makes me wonder where all the years went gee, that sure sounds like something my dad would have said! ; my middle daughter certainly not to be overlooked ; is continuing on and will be entering the prime years of her high school days as well. all three are doing well. each of them in their own way, are "graduating" into a new phase of their lives. they will be exposed to new experiences, new friends, and creating new memories and it seems just like yesterday they were all so small. forgive me if i sound like a proud parent but i know that each you and 3 card poker rule or play video poker. Another project in oro is the road repairs which are at a stand still. we did a section of road last year running along the south side of the park from the foot bridge by the club house to the southwest corner of the park . after talks with three different asphalt contractors, and getting three different opinions on how to do the repairs, not to mention the reaction from the owners on the repairs we did, i at a loss at what to do. so we are going to hire a road engineer to look at our roads and tell us what to do. on a very sad note a member of the board of directors, robert thorne, passed away on may 23, 2007. bob was a board member on and off for nine years. bob has served as both president and treasurer on our board. he will be sadly missed by all of us at oro. respectfully submitted. S i approach my favorite holiday, the festival of sukkot, i gather in the harvest of the past year and reflect on the blessings in my life. i blessed to be part of a loving family, to be part of a caring community, and to belong to the jewish people. rabbi kerry olitzky writes of the blessing of jewish unity in his book, 100 blessings every day: "on the holiday of sukkot, we take the lulav and etrog, the myrtle and the willow. we shake them all together after saying a special blessing. the talmud emphasizes the importance of holding these four different species together: they represent various individual human attributes. "the symbolism: not only does it take all kinds to make this mitzvah work, it also takes a certain alltogetherness, a unity. the same applies to synagogue communities.we are different people who come from different traditions and different walks of life-- but what brings us together is a common purpose that transcends all that. "the unity of synagogue fellowship is vitally important to our own well-being. we can learn something from everybody. in fact, our differences probably help contribute to our vitality.to learn how to survive life's inevitable shakes without getting all bent out of shape, " we join together in community and poker rule three card.
